Burger King wasn't up to snuff, but there was a McDonald's right around the way so I stopped in to see what's what. I was impressed right off the bat by the McCafe. It was a real cafe. Real espresso machine, real pastries, real classy. The actual McD's was a little further in the building and it was just about the same as you'd expect anywhere else. I tried a couple things off their value menu that you can't get in the states and had a plain burger and finished off with an espresso in the cafe. All in all, a cheaper and better experience than Burger King. I guess when you're the biggest burger chain on the planet, you might just know what you're doing.
Pretty much what every McD's looks like, everywhere. Curry McChicken, NYCrispy Beef and Ham Croquettes stood out from the rest as decidedly not normal American stuff
The McToast, basically, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Dollar Menu.
The Pizzarotto. Pretty much what you'd expect if you ordered pizza at McDonald's, some kind of flatbread filled with tomato sauce & cheese. Not bad, tasted kinda microwaved, probably awesome if you're stoned. Also dollar menu (or Salvaeur Menu, whatever the crap that means)
The Cafe had actually fresh baked, good looking stuff. Profiteroles, tiramisu, eclairs... Starbucks wishes it had pastries like this.
Decent prices and oh my, look at those cakes.
An espresso for .90 Euro made by an actual dude and it didn't taste like machine urine. Plus Giuseppe here was pretty cool (not his actual name, I didn't bother to read the nametag)
As a former barista, I appreciate a good espresso. Espresso is everywhere in Rome and this wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was a damn sight better than Starbucks. (also, bonus points for an actual ceramic demitasse)
And lastly, my lovely daughter, Constance. If you could read her mind, she's probably thinking: "Cut the shit dad, no more fast food ok?"
So yeah, I also had a plain hamburger and it was exactly like any other. I've had my fill of shitty processed foods. My homesickness has been replaced by gastrointestinal distress. What am I going to eat/do next? Even I don't know.
